The Push and Pull of the Urban Giant
In his first solo exhibition artist Dan Rosenthal is showing at Gerard Sekoto Gallery, Alliance Francaise, 17 Lower Park Drive, from August 10. Rosenthal’s exhibition of 3 series explores the relationship between people and their urban surroundings.
His photographs document and celebrate both the decay and beauty of inner cities. The exhibition ranges from the graphic capturing of ordinary objects, to the sweeping and majestic beauty of Joburg’s century-old architecture.
The pictures are provocative as well as nostalgically pleasing. He captures contrasting
images of the 21st Century (a fast-food outlet), juxtaposed with the crumbling grand buildings of a different era. Rosenthal shows a brilliant ability to combine the small and banal with what is grand and imposing. His images will resonate with those who have known Joburg over the decades. Newcomers will gain a new appreciation of Africa’s most prosperous city.
Rosenthal, who has lived in Johannesburg all his life, has previously exhibited with Addict Lab. His exhibition will run for a week.
