Message from the Parkview Residents' Association:
"We are making Parkview and Greenside East a much safer place to live, work, walk and play - but we need your help urgently. We have an excellent cost effective plan that will deliver 24 hour patrols of all our streets. But 440 households will need to sign up to make it happen. Parkview also now has 55 streetwatch leaders who are co-ordinating our efforts across the suburb. Streetwatch leaders are meeting on Tuesday 11th November at 6pm at Scusi, Tyrone Avenue. Any other residents are welcome to attend."

Our topic for the meeting in October is a Lesson Review of the 2nd half of the lessons delivered during this year and is an interactive question and answer presentation to motivate domestics to recall what they have learned. The date of the meeting is Friday, 31 October at 10am at St Columba’s Church.

Calling all volunteers! The CPF and SAPS often get asked how the community can get involved, and we realise that knowing what assistance you can offer the police and who to organise that through is not always easy and as such we are putting plans in place to help manage the support on offer from the community as well as the needs of the police.

The Parkview Domestic Watch will take place on Friday 26 September 2008 at 10am at St Columba's Church, Lurgan Road, Parkview.

A Parkhurst family, victims of a midnight break in and armed robbery, suspect that they were watched and targeted beforehand. Five armed men broke in to the Cockburn's 3rd Street home 3 weeks ago, bound and gagged the mother and asked where the 'young girl' was. Fortunately, the 18 year old daughter was sleeping safely upstairs.

The robbers wanted guns and the safe, neither of which the Cockburns own. They ransacked the house and found jewellery, which they pocketed.

"The first I knew of it, the robbers had already been terrorising my wife for at least an hour and a half," said Paul Cockburn. The thugs grabbed Cockburn in the study and one of them stabbed him in the head. "I screamed as loudly as I could," said Cockburn, "and they ran out of the door and jumped over the wall, disappearing into the night."

Cockburn's screams were so loud that people returning home after a night out a block away heard them and came to see what was going on.

Sean Twala, the convicted police inspector, is still at work at the Parkview Police Station. He was convicted of extortion and defeating the administration of justice in May this year, and faces still more charges, including corruption.

Superintendent Opperman of the Gauteng SAPS says that according to the Labour Relations Act and the Police Act, Twala must be permitted to work until the legal process is complete. "Unfortunately, the legal situation is such that we have to continue to employ him," said Opperman.

Penny Steyn of the Domestic Watch writes: "New volunteers are continually been searched for to assist with the catering and the registration – both are critical to the recipe of the success of being MAD – Making A Difference! Sadly Syd Catton is not going to be able to help us at the registration desk in the future so we are desperate for assistance. Any volunteers will be enormously appreciated and can call me to get details - it is only for one hour once a month. This meeting is growing and could get even bigger so help will be like manna from heaven. With Syd’s departure from the registration we don’t have ONE person to help us get the vast volumes of the domestics registered, labeled, new details of newcomers taken down, packages for new comers given out which includes the ADT folders, lessons, The Star’s fridge magnets and white board marker, the receipts for the R20 at the door payment, the sale of aprons and t-shirts and then the laying out of the refreshments during the lesson. HELP – IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO WOULD BE PREPARED TO GIVE A HAND!?"

If you see ANY of the following, Parkview SAPS urges you to report it immediately to 011 486 5038.

- People congregating in the street without apparent purpose
- Car parked with people in it for any prolonged period
- Car with one or more occupants driving slowly around the streets, seemingly without purpose
- Individuals sitting on a street corners for a long time
- Unknown callers who claim to be repairmen

NO ACTIVITY IS TOO SMALL TO REPORT. PARKVIEW SAPS ASKS THAT YOU REPORT ANYTHING.

The Parkview SAPS, the JMPD and City Parks rangers are holding a security awareness campaign for the public at Emmarentia and Zoo Lake on Saturday the 16th August.

The CPF has sponsored whistles for SAPS to hand out with their safety tips - one of the tips is to carry a whistle when out and about, so that if you are attacked you can whistle for help. All welcome to attend. The campaign starts at the Emmarentia Botanical Gardens at 11am and moves to Zoo Lake at about 11.45am.
