Foil Ball – SA Book of Records Attempt
The Foil Ball Record Attempt, a recycling campaign and attempt to break the SA Book of Records for the most recycled aluminium foil, has just been launched at The Brightwater Commons.
Luca Allasio a St John’s pupil and his sister Gia a Roedean pupil showed their support towards this initiative.
A giant hollow soccer ball structure has been constructed on the grass area outside of the centre's Woolworths store. Schools, businesses and the general public are encouraged to bring their used aluminium foil to the centre's ball deposit point.
The foil will be weighted and deposited into the soccer ball at the end of each day. The attempt is to collect 750kg of used aluminium foil and beat the current record of 732kg. The campaign, which aims to create an awareness of recycling and waste management will run until Wednesday 30th June.
As an incentive – parties depositing their used aluminium foil will stand the chance of winning various prizes. For every deposit of 50g, members of the public can enter a lucky draw with R20 000 in cash to be won at the end of every month from April to June.
Every entrant also stands the chance of winning a Chana Benni 1300cc Exclusive to the value of R89 900. For the school that deposits the most used aluminium foil a cash prize of R15 000 from Zibi Environmental will be awarded.
The Foil Ball recycling campaign will also be used as a fund raising initiative for the Lehae La Tshepo Centre that caters for disadvantaged children from the Windsor community. This will be done through the selling of advertising space on the panels of the soccer ball, as well as on the panels of the collar at the base of the ball.
Says Winton Woodrooffe (Director of Communications at Lehae La Tshepo Centre), who developed the Foil Ball concept, “In addition to raising funds for the aftercare centre, we hope to create an awareness of waste management amongst children. If they are motivated they may influence their parents who will hopefully influence the community in general”.
The ball, sponsored by Hulamin, was constructed by Tony Cracknell (of Multi Concepts Events), Tony Patterson (of the Aluminium Federation of South Africa) and Tony Nunes (of Venture Engineering). It was welded together by Bohler using a special thin walled aluminium welding technique.
Schools, businesses and individuals wishing to be part of this project or requiring further information can contact Winton Woodrooffe at: 082-379-8760.
