Discovery kicking South Africa into shape
Discovery has scored another winner in helping to keep South Africans active, fit and healthy with the launch of the new Discovery Soccer Park in Illovo on Thursday, August 8.
Soccer legends such as Lucas Radebe, Doctor Khumalo, Mark Williams, Neil Tovey and Andre Arendse unveiled the new state-of-the-art facility with an exhibition match.
The facility at the Wanderers Club is the first of its kind in South Africa, and was designed specifically to accommodate the popular five-a-side adaptation of the game.
The Discovery Soccer Park offers eight astro turf pitches with kickboards, precision built to a FIFA equivalent one-star rating.
The floodlit, all-weather pitches will deliver professional soccer stadium conditions to suit players of any skill level.
In addition to secure parking and easy access to the highway, the facility offers a deck above the pitches that stretches the length of the fields, offering premium viewing of the action below.
The Discovery Soccer Park is further enhanced by a restaurant and bar with big-screen televisions in the adjoining clubhouse, as well as a pitch-side deck and braai area.
Other amenities include luxury change rooms with separate showers for men, women and disabled persons, conferencing facilities, a fully equipped kitchen and mezzanine level offices.
The five-a-side concept has been a revelation for South African soccer and has been embraced at every level of the game, from social matches with family and friends to corporate leagues.
“The Discovery Soccer Park is another way in which Discovery has sought out new and exciting ways to keep South Africans fit and active, “said Immaculata Matjila, Discovery Deputy General Manager, Advertising and Sponsorships.
“Our commitment to this is reflected in this state-of-the-art facility, which I have no doubt will set the benchmark for the five-a-side game in this country.”
