Chevrah Kadisha Walks the Talk
On Sunday July 23, 2011 the Chevrah Kadisha took part in the 5km category of Discovery 702 Walk the Talk 2011 at Marks Park Sports Club. This was the Chev’s 4th participating year.
All the Chev’s proceeds went toward life-saving medical procedures. As the third biggest group participating, The Chev had a total of 550 walkers, including 60 staff members, and 12 Selwyn Segal mentally handicapped residents (each with a supervisor).
With everyone wearing purple marked hats and carrying purple balloons, it was easy to spot the Chevrah Kadisha group from kilometres away. It was a wonderful community building event and everyone had a great time participating in this year’s walk!
The Chevrah Kadisha is the oldest Jewish organisation in Johannesburg and the largest Jewish welfare organisation on the African continent. Established in 1888, it has been taking care of the welfare and burial needs of the community ever since.
From inception it provided a paternal, protective and unifying influence and accepted the leadership role in developing the community.
