Gauteng ready for Matric Exams
The Gauteng education department has done everything possible to make sure matric pupils are ready for their final exams, said education MEC Angie Motshekga in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
"Extensive intervention programmes were implemented and monitored by our district to make sure our learners are ready for the first ever examination of this new curriculum," she said.
Motshekga said extra tuition was provided through afternoon classes, Saturday school, school camps during school holidays, and the media.
"I would be really disappointed if we were to get a bad pass at the
end of the year because we have done everything that is humanly
possible to make sure that our learners are ready."
The examinations start officially on October 29 and they will finish on December 3.
For the first time, South African matric pupils will write standardised national papers in line with the new curriculum. The National Curriculum Statement was started with the Grade 10s in 2006.
Motshekga said this was a stage where teachers, parents and pupils were panicking because it was only ten days before pupils sit for their first examination paper.
"We expect better results this year because of the extra effort we put in to make sure we are ready."
She was confident about the security measures that had been put in place for the examinations.
"We have been working very closely with the police to ensure that from our printing facilities, to our district storage, everything is tight and that we comply with the guidelines as set by our national department."
A total of 106,109 candidates would be sitting for the matric examinations this year, of which 929 are part time. The examinations will be conducted in 721 centres throughout the province.
Motshekga said marking of the papers would commence on November 15 and was expected to be completed by December 10.
"The results should be available around Christmas as usual."
She thanked the teachers for their hard work in preparing the pupils
for the examinations.
