Parkview Squash Centre
The Parkview Squash Centre (PSC) was built in 1980 by Chris and Jean Grainger, enthusiastic squash players who then managed it for 20 years. The Parkview Squash Centre soon developed into one of the main sporting facilities for the Parks community.
It boasts 11 glass-backed squash courts, the most of any club in Johannesburg, and a gym hall which is used for aerobics and yoga. The Parkview Squash Centre is the only squash club in Johannesburg to have a generator. This is especially relevant these days and squash players are always assured of a game as the lights never go out.
In 2006 the Parkview Squash Centre was threatened with demolition by the Wallers’ View developer. It was saved by mining house Assore Ltd, who bought it as a social responsibility project. They thus ensured that the Parks community wouldn't lose this valuable facility.
PSC was given a complete refurbishment and now offers top-quality change-rooms and social areas, plus a full-time reception service.
Squash club manager, Craig van der Wath, is a former South African squash champion. His enthusiastic leadership of the club creates an active and social ‘squash scene’ for all standards of player, from beginner to top level. Craig has several assistant coaches and offers a full coaching programme for juniors and adults. He offers advice on squash equipment and runs a well-stocked Pro-Shop with a racket-stringing service. Local businesses are invited to submit a team and join the Business Squash League.
Gale Gordon runs aerobics and Gudrun von Wimmersperg yoga and both are experts in their respective fields. The gym has a magnificent sprung floor and is light and airy, giving on to the pretty garden. Please enquire at reception for details of times and prices for these classes.
Each section of PSC, squash, yoga and aerobics, run independently of each other.
