Citiparks and JMPD join forces
Parks are where we go to exercise, relax and socialise. This has become difficult to do in the past few years. Crime is the deterrent, even in the beautiful green lungs of our city.
Citiparks and the Jo'burg Metro Police (JMPD) have joined forces and 30 uniformed JMPD officers have been seconded to Citiparks. They will patrol the parks under the supervision of the park wardens, and will enforce the by laws. Fines will be issued for unleashed dogs, for example, drinking in public and/or playing music too loudly. "The JMPD officers will also be able to make citizens' arrests for any more sinister crimes", said Jenny Moodley, marketing and media manager for Citiparks.
Zoo Lake is one of the flagship parks, with two JMPD officers patrolling constantly, on foot or by car. Other parks will be visited on a rotational basis, but standby or backup officers are available to all parks in the city. "Members of the public must report crime or suspicious activity to the information kiosk at Zoo Lake", said Moodley.
"This initiative would not have been possible if it were not for the residents of the surrounding areas," said Moodley. She issued warm greetings and thanks to the caring and involved members of our suburbs.
The official launch of this coalition will be held in March, but it is hoped that it will be one solution to our ongoing problem of crime.
