Charity begins at home
Third Thursday, a charity formed in 2004 by a group of women eager to make a difference in the community, has achieved much in its 3 years.
Named for the once a month meeting day, Third Thursday's mantra was ‘Even my little bit counts’ from the word go. Parties for orphaned children, delivering fresh fruit and vegetables to a nursery school in Alex, donating money and necessities to a home for single mums, are just some of the many good deeds they do.
In 2006, Third Thursday set about raising funds to build a house with international organisation, Habitat for Humanity. Their aim was to raise R70 000, enough to build one house, but in the end they raised twice as much. Volunteers were recruited to build, and two houses were built in June 2007.
In 2007, Third Thursday began the fund raising to establish a LEAP Science and Maths School in Alex. Registered as a Public Benefit Organisation, LEAP schools work closely with community leaders to strengthen township initiatives and projects. This year, Third Thursday will continue with the LEAP fundraising.
The women of Third Thursday are Nikki Bakker, Jane Codrington, Helen Pournara, Amy Quiding, Lisa Grobbelaar, Giselle Willcox, Kim Forbes, Jeanette Long and Kerry Haggard.
Keep up the good work, Third Thursday!
