Car theft at Valley Centre on Jan Smuts Avenue
Yesterday afternoon, Saturday March 19, 2011, my husband and I went for a late lunch at Village Centre on Jan Smuts Avenue (corner Buckingham Avenue). It's the little centre where the Meat Centre and Woolies is located.
When we were ready to leave, we discovered that our car had been stolen! It was parked right outside the Standard Bank ATM - which is next to the security office and directly under a surveillance camera!
A security guard was on duty - yet our car was still taken. And in broad daylight! We watched the surveillance footage: the theft took place at 5.10pm and was all recorded. No security guard in sight...surprise, surprise!
Please be careful when going to this centre! Our car was a black VW Polo GTI. These guys were professionals - even though the vehicle was locked and the alarm activated, it didn't make a sound. They were in the car within seconds and driving off within minutes.
Village Centre is clearly a hot spot as there are no car-guards, no secure access gates and the "security" on duty were nowhere to be seen.
I will never go back to Village Centre again.
