Domestic Watch September 2008
The Parkview Domestic Watch will take place on Friday 26 September 2008 at 10am at St Columba's Church, Lurgan Road, Parkview. Penny Steyn writes, "Our September topic is “Domestic Watch Lesson reviews and Discussions Number One” and I will be covering the first group of lessons reviews of 2008 and opening it to the domestics for their recall, what lessons they have most benefited by and because there is obviously a great need for the attendees to talk about their own crime incidents (every crime incident has a lesson attached to it) I will be encouraging all of them to share their stories. Their stories will include bad crime incidents that they have personally been involved with and good incidents (believe it or not many have prevented crime) where they can relay what they did to prevent a bad crime incident from occurring.
Please can we keep reminding the domestics that they will receive a Nando’s gift voucher worth R50 if they bring someone new? There is no doubt that this is a great incentive and it is what we call “Spread the Word Campaign”. It is working like a charm and our numbers are swelling in all the suburbs.
Our Year End Certificate Ceremony is looming, at which huge accolades are poured on all Domestics and Certificates presented to all who have attended 5 or more lessons. The SAPS will be there in force - with the SAPS orchestra, the dog squad, the mounted squad, top Officers on the stage, etc: it is an occasion which will be talked about for the whole of the next year, so don't let your Domestic miss this great event.

I was privileged to be a guest speaker organized by the Rotary Public Safety Committee at a morning anti-crime seminar where a number of extremely high profile people spoke including two people from Business Against Crime. I was absolutely bowled over and thrilled to have this opportunity but mostly I was thrilled to hear what Advocate Lorinda Nel from BAC said: “Business Against Crime has done a study on the success of Domestic Watch in the suburbs where this has been implemented. It is apparent that this crime prevention initiative has drastically reduced crime in the suburbs where Penny Steyn has implemented these lessons.”
So whilst I am the speaker and present most of the lessons the true accolades must surely go to all those of you who have not only believed in this project but truly put so much extraordinary effort into ensuring that they continue to be a success. I thank you one and all deeply. I can’t do this on my own, this is a joint effort and truly I am deeply grateful to each person who continues to help us Make A Difference together."
